Menudo dia !

Question

Chateando hoy en el chat, ha salido la expresion "menudas juergas no pegabamos" .

Y mi interlocutor ha procedido a preguntarme sobre el significado de "menudas".

He intentado explicarselo pero he caido en la cuenta que esta palabra puede usarse en muy diversas situaciones.

• Menuda es tu suegra

• Es un tipo menudo

Y la verdad, a parte de haber sido bastante didactica la charla me he dado cuenta que palabras tan cotidianas para un Español como "menudo" son desconocidas por la mayoria de los estudiantes.

¿Cual sería su equivalente en ingles?

HI lilo, es cierto, palabras tan coloquiales no son muy conocidas.

Menudo is normally translated as:

What a....!!!

Menuda noche: What a night!! Menudo tío!! What a man!!

On the other hand:

Menuda es tu suegra...

Hmmm, let's wait for a native for an idea.

This means that you can expect anything from this mother-in-law of yours, she is a woman with caracter.,...this is not necessarily polite or frienly, while "menuda noche" is a very positive statement.

Any ideas?

Menudo/a [adj]

can also mean:

• (=pequeño) small, minute;

• (person) diminutive, slight;

• (figurative) slight insignificant

And then the question asked above by Liloman is "What would be the equivalent in English". Well how about:

Pequeño = tiny

Diminutive = petite

insignificant = unimportant

If Liloman is looking for a single English word to replace or equate to "menudo" I cannot think what that might be. So there! I quit!

'A menudo' can also mean 'just a minute' (creo).

¿Alguien sabe su equivalente en ingles?

Su uso ya lo conocemos gracias a Heidita pero su equivalente no y pienso que seria muy interesante.
