"He worked" can either be: el trabajaba (used to work, or just generally worked - no time frame emphasized) or el trabajo [accent on the o] (worked for a definite period of time, but it is now over with)

El trabajaba en cines pequenos y poco a poco se hizo famoso. or El trabajo en cines pequenos y poco a poco se hizo famoso.
