un amigo le ha hecho un favor ,y el otro quiere devolverle ese favor. pero el otro piensa que siente lástima así que le dice;que no es eso y le dice esa frase.

"This whole thing" refers to everything that happened. If you told the story to someone, and didn't leave out any part of the story, that would be "this whole thing."

And what he is saying is this: "I regret everything that has happened." He feels bad about all of it, and wishes that none of it had happened.
