I noticed in lesson 2.2 "Voy a ir a la iglesia." was told to be correct. "I am going to go to the church." Besides being somewhat of a spanish tonguetwister, is there any other way to say this?

To expand on woajiaorober's comment, to say "Voy a la Iglesia" would mean "I'm going to church," which could indicate that you are in the process of going to church, while "Voy a ir a la Iglesia" would indication that in the future you're going to go the the church. The former relies more on context than the latter because it is less specific.

HI rom, welcome to the forumsmile

It is unsusual to use voy a ir though, not so very common over here to simplify the sentence. Even though it might lead to confusion as hithere rightly points out.

Voy a la iglesia mañana.- voy a ir a la iglesia mañana.

Both are correct and the second is more common.

You could also say iré a la iglesia.
