when in the desert, often one sees "dirt devils" cyclones of rising dust and dirt spinning up from the ground. what is the correct word for this in spanish. (common site in the Sonoran desert, so I would expect the Mexican's have a word for it) thank you.

Maybe Tormenta de Arena ? Sandstorm

It's proper English name is "dust devil". And Spanish - una tromba de polvo or una manga de polvo. You can find a picture of it here.
