The idiom is well known in English, but is it used in the same way in Spanish at all?

It seems so, yes! http://www.spanishdict.com/translate/grave:

to make somebody turn in his grave -> hacer que alguien se revuelva en su sepultura

There is also "silent as the grave". http://www.spanishdict.com/translate/tumba:

ser (como) una tumba (informal) -> to be as silent as the grave
