ASK A QUESTION Why do we use 'El' and 'La' for what should be the same word?

I understand that 'el' is masculine, and 'la' is feminine. So 'el profesor' would be 'the teacher', where his masculinity is understood. But how is it that a tuba can be feminine? Or a patio masculine? It makes no sense to me. Is there any word that can be used for 'the', without all this gender confusing?

No. There is very little gender left in English, but many languages, including romance languages, have gender. There is no way to avoid it and no rule to determine the gender of nouns, you simply have to know. The only advice I can give is that a word ending in 'a' is more often than not feminine.
