I think the word for when is cuando, I'm not sure, but is there any good memory tricks? Don't say flash cards, I already tried, they don't work well for me.

No tricks...just practice using some sentences that describe the various things you do when/cuando something happens. For example:

Cuando estoy cansado, voy a dormir. When I am tired, I go to sleep. Cuando estoy feliz, sonrío. When I am happy, I smile. Cuando estoy triste, voy al centro comercial. When I am sad, I go to the mall. Cuando estudio español, me siento bien. When I study Spanish, I feel good.
