"To lead/influence somebody into something; I would use "llevar" or "inducir".

"¿Qué te llevaba a creer que él estuvo serio sobre el matrimonio?" (What lead you to believe he was serious about marrage?)

I think "llevar" is a great all-around verb.

Watch out -- I am a beginner and my response may be hazardous to your Spanish.
