I don't know why we have them the other way around in English either....or why we only have a single mark at the end of a sentence and not something at the beginning too.

I guess it's just a matter of "custom". It sets a sentence off nicely though as immediately noticeable as something other than just a simple declaration. The "upside down" direction is for the beginning of the sentence, and the other direction for the end of the sentence.

I always like seeing them though....it's like I know right off the bat when I start reading a sentence if it's going to be a question (¿) or something someone is really excited about (¡)

¿You know what I mean?

¡Spanish is so cool!

Thats because in Spanish. the way thier sentence are it would be jumbled up in the wrong places. As for English, it's the way I'm talking now. It's hard to explain. But do you get what I'm saying?

There were times while reading,in English, aloud, something I hadn't read before, it would have been nice if I had a little notice that I was reading a question.
