Why is that some spanish words I remember straight away whereas other words, especially (los verbos) take me ages and continuous repetition (mismo un martillo) before it somehow reaches my longterm memory. Any tips???

It probably comes down to repetition.

Individual verbs (with the exception of the more common ones like ser, estar, hacer, etc) are not usually repeated on a sentence by sentence bases as frequently as other parts of speech. Moreover, even if you do repeat the verb, it may be in an entirely different tense making its memorization even more challenging.

What I try to do is pay more attention to the stem, as this is usually what holds the root meaning of the word.

That said, what it comes down to is repetition, so if you want to remember verbs then you will need to practice making sentences over and over with the same verb(s) (ad nauseum) until they start to stick.

If you practice the same verb or set of verbs making sentences with these verbs and these verbs only for any significant amount of time, they will stick.
