When referring to something small, what is the difference between adding an ito/a or illo/a?

For example: Campanilla is little bell, and perrito is little dog. Why isn't "campanilla" campanita and why isn't "perrito" perrilla? ¡Yo doy gracias para su ayuda!

either campanita or perrillo is equivalent to campanilla or perrito respectively
