You know I hate it when people say this... but I am going to tell you...

It means "so", and is used before an adverb to give extra exphasis.
For example:
"Los guepardos corren tan rápidamente." "Cheetahs run so fast."
Without "tan" it would just mean "Cheetahs run fast."
I'm pretty sure this is right, but I'm still learning too, so if that needs correcting by someone who knows more go right ahead ![]()
"Tan" is also used before adjectives/adverbs in statements of equality.
"El chico es tan sociable como la chica". (The boy is as sociable as the girl).
"El gato corre tan rápidamente como el perro." (The cat runs as fast as the dog).
When making statements of equality concerning the number of nouns/objects, use "tanto/tanta/tantos/tantas" depending on the gender and number of the noun.
"Tenemos tantas trompetas como arpas." (We have as many trumpets as harps).
