"¿Por qué estudian ellos?" I think is the right way to ask it.

  • That's what I thought also, but the prof wants the question to reflect the underlined word(s) in the statement. In this case, "Ellos estudian PARA APRENDER." ¿Para que estudian ellos? Anyone else with a comment? - Sra-Zoro Sep 18, 2009 flag

¿Para qué lees un libro médico? Porque quiero ser cirujano.

?Por qué lees un libro médico? Porque Es el único libro que tengo.

I disagree. The answer to the question might be "para aprender (o saber más) de la cirugía". The question that should have preceded the answer is "¿Por qué estudias/lees ese libro?" "para" relates to the goal for which you aim, "por" relates to whatever motivated you from the beginning. The problem is that this distinction is not made in the same way in English (and, thus, we don't have clearly different ways of expressing the difference).
