My boyfriend and his family are from Honduras. While he is fluent, most of them are far from it. He says there is a name for his dialect and they "don't speak 'spanish'" they speak this other thing, which makes sense since I am pretty good but can't understand them. Is there a site or a book where I might find their dialect so I can learn it or do I have to learn it all by ear?

HI truly, it is very silly to say that all Spanish speaking countries speak a different language.

If your boyfriend wishes to only use slang, well, that is up to him, you can only learn slang on the streets and within a group who speaks that slang.

Spanish however is used all over the world and it is certainly the same language everywhere, with some differences in words and expressions, but on the whole, ONE language.

Well the best thing to do is to ask your boyfriend. lol like you said he is fluent in it.

It would depend on the dialect. It sounds like he may be referring to a specific tribal language within Honduras.

Your best bet would be to find out for certain what the specific dialect is that he is referring to, then do a search on Amazon.com. If it is a "common" dialect you could probably find something... if it isn't... good luck.

  • he has outright refused to teach me. and no, it's not a tribal language, rather a dialect of spanish with lots of slang terms. - trulyee Sep 17, 2009 flag

And there is no such thing as a Honduran dialect of Spanish..

It may be a sort of patòis with Mayan words mixed in.

An excellent resource that I can recommend is

www.fluentfuture.com

it is a language exchange social network. Members from around the world teach each other their native languages online. You may start a language exchange with someone who speaks the language you want to learn and interact over skype or msn. This is all completely free. It is also possible to pay rated teachers for individual tuition.

My Honduran friends use the "vos" conjugation instead of "tú", but once you get used to it, it's not really that strange. I'm sure there are expressions that I've missed but we seem to communicate ok.
