I have been watching short video clips with subtitles in Spanish and English lately, but I just finished watching a full length movie without subtitles all the way through and I was very suprised at how much I understood. I recognized a lot of phrases and words from the lessons. I may catch on sooner than I thought.

Enhorabuena.

There should be some kind of badge for that!

  • I guess anyone could claim watching a movie though and get a badge. - Seitheach Sep 16, 2009 flag

Congratulations! It's very exciting to watch a movie and realize that you understood most of what everyone said.

Yeah, I deserve another badge. Maybe we should start a petition or riot in the streets or something.

  • A riot in the streets, Phil? Where you are I understand they don't play with firecrackers! - Moe Sep 16, 2009 flag
  • Actually they play with really big firecrackers. - Seitheach Sep 17, 2009 flag

This is a response I gave a few days ago -- I don't know if you read it so here it is again. This exercise really works.

Watch and listen to 5-6 different movies/TV shows with the Spanish language track on (no subtitles) -- ones that you know well in English. This assumes you have a good/fair knowledge of verbs and vocabulary.

Do not try to back translate to English in your head while you listen; just hear the words in Spanish. Repeat and do this often (with the same programs) for a few weeks and you will make the break-thru.

This exercise will take you a long way to speaking in Spanish with out back translating to English in your conversations.

I find that if the movie and acting are good, I can understand more than I otherwise could but I think you are way ahead of me. Congratulations!

To answer RaquelS. The movie was Duelo en el desierto. It is a black and white from 1963. I was surprised that I actually enjoyed it.
