jamás digas nunca .
never say never
As far as I can see no one has referred to the Diccionario esencial de la lengua española produced by the Real Academia Española which is the official source of correct use of the spanish language. Jamás is described as a temporal adverb meaning the same as nunca and goes on to set out the expressions in which jamás is used. Nunca is also described as a temporal adverb with expressions in which it is used. It is synonymous with nunca in general use. Jamás and nunca are used together officially only when strengthening of the feeling is needed. The use of these two words in particular situations appear to be purely local or popular expressions at the moment and not yet encompassed in the official dictionary.

- Welcome back Maureen, did you notice that this thread has lain dorment since Sep 2009! You do like your history, don't you! - LateToDinner Jul 8, 2010 flag
- Yes I had noticed but none of the answers I could see were adequate and the additional information might have been of use to recent students. This time scale I cannot consider as history. My studies involve spanish history up to & including the civil war - MaureenPeter Jul 19, 2010 flag
Does that mean, then, that jamás y nunca are the same?
I found a post in Word Reference where native speakers are discussing "nunca vs jamás"
Depending on the situation/phrase either can be a reasonable equivalent. That is why people ask for more context (a complete sentence).
El País de Nunca Jamás. That is an expression that sounds mythological or imaginary.
How is it translated in English?: Never never land?.
- Yes it is never never land. - kenwilliams Sep 22, 2009 flag
Nunca means 'never' in spanish
El país nunca jamás, if my memory serves me right I think this is how spanish television described Micheal Jacksons never never land recently.
¿How do you say never in spanish?
Nunca o jámas
Both these words mean never I have highlighted jámas as it is more emphatic than nunca according to the Spanish Oxford Dictionary (3rd Edition)
This is what is says:
Nunca adv
A (at no time) nunca; more emphatic jamás
por ejemplos:
1 He never helps = ayuda nunca / no ayuda nunca
2 I've never heard anything like it = í Nunca o jamás he oido nada semejante !
3 Never in a Million years did I think I'd win = Jamás (en la vida) pensé que iba a ganar
Never-never land = el país de la fantasía /del ensueño
I hope that this helps ![]()
