Is the Mexican dialect very different from the Spanish in other countries?

The spanish I am most familiar with is spoken by Mexicans. A lot of times I use words that I learned in school or from books that they don't normally use, or know at all. Is there a big difference between proper Spanish and Mexican Spanish?
