I need to describe engine knocking, which is also known as pinging, detonation.

This is common on high compression engines using a low octane fuel, also can be attributed to other engine problems.

Hola, sn33kyp3t3

After a search on the internet, Wikipedia and my "Big Fat Span/Eng & Eng/Span Dictionary (HarperCollins ─ 7th Edition ─ 2003) I found that all the following terms or words in Spanish seem to apply equally and to mean the same thing:

Engine Knock or Engine Ping = 1) picado de bielas, 2) autoencendido,

3) preignición, 4) golpeteo

I hope this is the information you wanted.

Over here I think it is called pinking and can occur when the spark plug ignites way before the piston has reached the top of it´s compression stroke. Unfortunately if there is a word in Spanish, I do not know it.

So if I said this to a mechanic:

"Creo que el motor esta pinking."

Would he/she know what I was talking about?
