I hope you didn't misunderstand me, Heidita. I was in agreement with changing the title, just not with samdie's assertion that some 98% of all threads start off with a title like that. I'm sure it seems like that to you and Eddy, though. It would be good for new members to be directed automatically to the forum rules to cut down on some of this.

No. I didn't say that 98% start with titles like that. My claim was that 98% of threads are written to ask for help (understanding/translating) something (so the fact that they want help is almost a given and what the title should suggest is the nature of the problem with which they want help). Occasionally, someone simply wants to share a thought/poem/joke/song but those are very much in the minority.

OK, now that makes more sense to me. Sorry I misunderstood. That did seem strange to me that samdie would make an exaggerated statement like that.

And you are 100% right in your 98% estimation, and in your suggestion about the titles. I have made the suggestion that new members be directed to the Rules when joining. It would take them less than 5 minutes to read, and it might save them some embarrassment from having their first post renamed, moved, and then shot down by other forers, because they didn't understand the rules. I had been a member for some time before I heard someone mention "the Rules," and I thought, "Oh no, I have been posting all this time and didn't even know there were rules. I hope I haven't broken any." Later when I tried to find them to reference/link to them for another forer, it took me forever to locate them in some ancient thread.

I think that at the very least, there should be a button or link stationed in a prominent place on the screen so that people at least know there are rules, and then they have no excuse if they choose to ignore them or violate them.

His point was not that it was typed incorrectly, but that it is not an appropriate title for a thread. I disagree with him, though, that "some 98% of all the threads start off with" something like that. We do see it too often, though. Note that the title of the thread has been changed.

We'll give Eddy a mulligan for just coming off vacation. He did at least make the original title orthographically correct.

Unfortunately there are not too many members who are "au fait", excuse my French, with the term "mulligan".

In the past, Heidi and I have suggested that the during the enrolement procedure prospective new members are directed to the rules page. They would then have to click an OK box to proceed. We realise that doesn't necessarily mean that they would have read the rules but at least they would have seen them.

I think that's a good idea. Then at least they would know that there ARE rules. And they would have no room to whine if their post gets moved/retitled/deleted, or if they are tersely referred to the Reference section or a previous thread.
