¿Cómo está(s)? = How are you?

¿Qué tal? = What's up?

¿Cómo está usted? This is how you say it in Spanish. I hope you get what you looking for! LOL

¿Cómo está(s)? = How are you? ¿Qué tal? = What's up?

These two phrases mean the same question, but the (s) means you say this to a female (girl) But for some reason this rule does not apply with the second one. You would normally say 'Come estas' to someone that you know. But to a stranger you would emply the second phrase/question. Hope this helpedd.

If you were also reffering to how you say them, as in pronunciation. Then you say ¿Cómo está(s)?

Co-mo es-sta(s) Keh-tal

I hope this helpedd.

Really? I'm still pretty new to this, but I thought ¿cómo estás? was the informal way of saying "how are you", regardless of the gender of the person you are asking?

This is another guess on the subject..
¿Cómo está? = How is ...
¿Cómo estás? = How are you? - familiar
¿Cómo está usted? = How are you? formal

No, that is wrong.

The "s" has nothing at all to do with whether you are talking to a male or a female.

"¿Cómo estás (tú)?" is the informal way of asking "How are you?" using the tú form of the verb "estar", as you can see.

"¿Cómo está (Ud.)?" is the formal way of asking "How are you?"using the Ud. form of the verb "estar".

It really all comes down to the informality vs. formality of tú vs. Ud.

Also: It's ¿Cómo estás? not "Come estás", which means "He/she/you eat something called "estás"/Eat something called estás!" tongue laugh
